Most of earth’s oceans is still unexplored and there are creatures that are yet to be discovered. Mauritius is surrounded by the sea and though most of its lagoons and waters have been explored, it remains fascinating to me. I love the ocean. There’s history under the sea, with shipwrecks left unmoved from the seabed and animals making their home out of it. It is a whole world emanating from the fauna and flora from below the waves.

Mauritian cuisine is known for its fervent use of spices and I wanted to portray that in colours I see. The warmth of the aromas found in the Mauritian cuisine often come from how spices and herbs are used. Mauritius’ cuisine is a mix of different cultures found in one plate and that’s the beauty of it: sometimes sweet, sometimes sour, and sometimes hot and spicy. From India to China and passing along European influences, that’s Mauritian cuisine, creole cuisine.

The sea has always inspired me. Often, what I would do is go and sit at the seaside just admiring the view. Well, one thing that has always intrigued me is how our Mauritian pirogues will go on the sea, that’s sometimes rough, and still manage to get back. I always picture this as a David fighting Goliath. A small boat against big waves. But, sadly, not always these small embarcations win against them. Here, I portrayed the beauty and the danger of the sea.

The seven coloured earth. Mauritius is known for this particular attraction. When I was still a kid, we still could go and walk on the 7 coloured earth, but due to erosion and other climate condition affecting its particular aspect, we can’t do this no more. But it’s so amazing to the eye to look at something that has been shaped over centuries of earth’s transformation to make it what I call God’s Art. Here, I’m just painting a work of art over a masterpiece.

The warmth of the air, the sun, the warm waters of the sea, the hot sand and people’s smile, that’s a beautiful image of Mauritius. There’s so much about Mauritius I can represent and that’s why I chose to paint it differently. I see the colours and the geometry behind our landscape. I think there’s beauty in everything we see on earth and that’s why I chose to paint the other side of Le Morne mountain too. Perspective can make something look even more beautiful and warmer to a soul.

Mauritius has known many developments but its green landscapes are so beautiful. One thing that transports me every-time is when I’m in the midst of nature, in one of our forests and that I feel every touch of what’s around me, my cognitive senses come alive again. The smell, the wind, the earth under my feet, the droplets of water coming from the leaves… A sweet moment that revives a soul. An escapism in a tropical forest.

Mauritius has a multi-cultural society and its history is heavy. It is a country that knew slavery and indentured labourers coming from their native lands to build a new country that today we cherish. But we never forget those men and women, our ancestors, forced to quit their land, their families, their home to sometimes even not making it to what was then Isle De France. I always celebrate women, and through this painting, I celebrate women that were forced to work and that had to grow their children through slavery.

Mauritius and its diverse culture has always fascinated me. Though I’m a native Mauritian, there are things I still don’t know about. The Koi fish is special to some people. I was wondering why often I would see it in some restaurants. Once, I stood stare at an aquarium full of this fish and I learned that same day that it represented luck, prosperity and good fortune. Having that in a home would bring prosperity to the family living there.

History is testimony of how the human footprint can change the future. The Dodo used to be freely walking around the island, it’s a weird bird that was too heavy to fly but had wings for it. It’s a bird that is omnipresent on the national emblem though it disappeared centuries ago when the first settlers came to the Island, the Dutch. Soon, the bird became extinct, but the image of this bird has stayed till date. It reminds me of how nature can be so fragile and that human mistake can be dramatic for the wildlife.
